Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, India
The Mar Thoma Syrian Church began when a group within the Syrian Church of Malabar, in India, initiated a reformation movement in 1836. While the church retains many characteristics of the ancient Eastern churches, the Mar Thoma Church has close relationships with Christian churches around the world and was a founding member of the World Council of Churches in 1948.
The Mar Thoma Church has been in full communion with the Anglican Communion since 1974. In 1979, The Episcopal Church and Mar Thoma Church formalized an agreement allowing for clergy licensing and Episcopal diocesan bishop oversight, among other elements of full communion fellowship.
