{"id":932997,"date":"2025-05-28T09:10:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T13:10:50","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2026-06-23T20:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T00:00:11","slug":"bible-study-pentecost-3-c-june-29-2025","status":"publish","type":"bible_study","link":"https:\/\/staging.episcopalchurch.org\/es\/bible_study\/bible-study-pentecost-3-c-june-29-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Bible Study: Proper 8 (C) \u2013 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/lectionary\/proper-8c\/\">RCL: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-16; Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20; Galatians 5:1, 13-25; Luke 9:51-62<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/P8-2025-Bible-Study-Graphic-FB-EN-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-333000\" style=\"width:512px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-kings-2-1-2-6-16\"><strong>2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-16<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>He picked up the mantle of Elijah\u2026 (2 Kings 2)<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2 Kings reading provides us with the basis for the expression \u201cpicking up the mantle.\u201d In the 2 Kings reading, Elijah is about to ascend into heaven and Elisha requests that he inherit Elijah\u2019s Spirit. As Elijah ascends into heaven, he drops his mantle, and Elisha literally picks it up. With the mantle, Elisha has the same power as Elijah to part the waters. We see that the spirit of discipleship, leadership, and evangelism has passed to the next generation. During this time of year, there are many graduations. Frequently, in this context, we hear about passing the mantle to a new generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can we pass the mantle of faith and discipleship?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can we inherit and embrace the mantle that has been passed to us?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we carry forward the mantle of Christ, like Elisha carrying forward the mantle of Elijah?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-psalm-77-1-2-11-20\"><strong>Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>My hands were stretched out by night and did not tire. (Psalm 77:2)<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This psalm celebrates God\u2019s leadership and the psalmist\u2019s persistence. When Elisha inherited Elijah\u2019s mantle, he was taking on the responsibility of that mantle, which would require tireless work and challenges. Similarly, in Luke\u2019s gospel, Jesus challenged his followers to have the courage to move forward and follow him.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When it gets challenging, how do we keep stretching ourselves?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we maintain our persistence in our faith and discipleship?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are those things that reinforce our discipleship so that we can stretch out our hands tirelessly?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-galatians-5-1-13-25\"><strong>Galatians 5:1, 13-25<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For you are called to freedom, brothers and sisters\u2026 (Galatians 5:1)<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Galatians reading, Paul introduces the fruits of the Spirit, and suggests that Christians find true freedom by living faithfully. This results in the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Who would not want those things? But, Paul also poses a challenge because he brings a very dualistic view to faith. He contrasts the \u201cworks of the flesh\u201d with the \u201cfruit of the Spirit.\u201d We are challenged to hear what Paul is saying about faith setting us free, without letting the dualism capture us in a more limited view of faith. As Richard Rohr writes about, we are challenged to move away from an \u201ceither\/or\u201d view of our faith to and \u201cand\/also\u201d view.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do we live into our faith and embrace the fruits of the Spirit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How and when do we see the fruits of the Spirit in our lives?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do the fruits of the Spirit set us free?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do the fruits of the Spirit tell us about our discipleship?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does Paul\u2019s dualism influence our faith? What are the benefits and the challenges?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-luke-9-51-62\"><strong>Luke 9:51-62<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62)<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel seems to pull together all the other readings from this week. Jesus is looking to pass his mantle to his followers, but it is not a conventional mantle. He rebukes James and John for looking to command fire to come down upon the Samaritans who do not welcome them. Jesus will not be a fiery, vengeful ruler. Moreover, Jesus challenges his followers to drop everything and follow him. He compels a son to forego his father\u2019s funeral and \u201cLet the dead bury their own dead,\u201d which was a very radical idea in heavily patriarchal 1<sup>st<\/sup>century Judaism. Jesus goes on to conclude with an even greater challenge for his followers. \u201cDon\u2019t look back.\u201d Anyone who looks back to their life before Christ is not fit for the Kingdom of God. Upon landing in Veracruz, Hernan Cortes ordered his crew to burn his ships, so they would move forward confidently. Jesus seems to be calling us to do the same.
