Diocese

A geographic jurisdiction composed of congregations overseen by a bishop. There are more than 100 dioceses in The Episcopal Church.

Alternative Meanings:

    Capitalize as part of a proper name, such as the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, but lowercase in all other instances: He was the fifth bishop of that diocese.

    Include “Episcopal” in any full reference to a diocese to avoid any confusion with Catholic dioceses.

    Several Episcopal dioceses go by the name “the Episcopal Church in [state/location].” Lowercase “the” in these references unless the diocese capitalizes it as part of its official name.
